What is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy helps people improve their quality of life by providing skilled interventions to help people regain, maintain, or improve their independence in daily life tasks they want to do and/or need to do. An “occupation” is anything activity that “occupies” your time such as self-care, home management tasks, work, leisure, and much more!
How can occupational therapy help me?
Occupational therapy can be a great benefit for people with a variety of difficulties. If you have difficulty completing daily tasks due to limited mobility, injury, cognitive impairment, or chronic illness - your occupational therapist can work with you to adapt these tasks to increase your independence. Your therapist can also work with you to remove or adjust environmental barriers that may impact your ability to function within your home and workspace.
Additionally, occupational therapy can also help individuals with autism, global developmental delay, or other conditions that impact cognition learn social skills, emotional regulation skills, and self-care.
How is occupational therapy different from
physical therapy?
Occupational therapy and physical therapy are often compared as they frequently work together. Some distinct differences are the areas of focus of each profession. Physical therapy focuses on regaining function through improving strengthening and mobility. Occupational therapy focuses on improving independence in participating in daily activities and self-care. Occupational therapy sometimes will overlap with physical therapy as they also may address fine motor skills, coordination, and strength.
